An inspiring message to help me persevere

Why I Do What I Do

I have always had a passion for mathematics, science, and engineering. In my freshman year of high school I posited my award-winning theory of non-euclidian cosmology. I was inspired by an idea published by author Isaac Asimov, so I wrote to him to get permission to use his idea. He wrote back to me with the message “Good luck on your theory. Before you are finished you’ll need lots of mathematics. Start studying.” His words inspired me. In my sophomore year I participated in the National Mathematics testing and place second place out of a school of over 4,000 high school students. While earning my bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering I was awarded the Ford / Golden Key Scholarship and served as president of the Ohio Epsilon chapter of the Tau Beta Pi engineering honor society. I also extended my studies to include anthropology, psychology, and communication. I have attended and led leadership and Robert’s Rules of Order workshops. I received my engineering degree in 2003 and subsequently worked as a mechanical project engineer. I am currently a member of the American Mathematical Society, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and a certified professional tutor through the National Tutoring Association.

I have tutored students mostly in physics and calculus, but I enjoy teaching all the STEM subjects. For over ten years I have taught and counseled other teachers regarding teaching styles, techniques, and methods. More recently I have realized the importance of respecting students learning preferences, so that their learning environment will feel safe and enjoyable.

I love sharing my passion for mathematics and mathematical modeling, and I am excited to help others learn the subjects of math, science, and engineering. I am very patient with learners, and I like to discover learning patterns and find ways to enhance student’s ability to understand the subject they are studying. As I remember Dr. Asimov’s inspiring words, it instills a desire to encourage others to achieve their success.

I love to help others succeed, so I have expanded my training to include ACT and SAT test preparation. Using best practices for studying and preparing for these important exams, I can help students do their best. I use proven techniques to boost scores. I reveal to the students ways to avoid stumbling blocks and improve time management. I can help them decide which test to take and assess which sections need to be focused on to achieve their goals.
